Travelling with Car Seats

What you should know about riding Lyft: car seat rules

These days, it’s easier for parents to plan city vacations using services like Lyft. But there are a lot of questions about Lyft management – related to using a child car seat! In this article, I’ll give you all the info you need to prepare for your trip.

Can Lyft take kids? Is Lyft kid-friendly?

Absolutely! We have used ride shares in many countries. Drivers are usually more patient than regular taxi drivers because they know they will get feedback from us after the ride. Lyft is perfect if you are planning a family vacation without a car.

Lyft is especially convenient for children because you can specify the (approximate) size of the car that suits your needs. If you only have one child or your children are old enough to use them, a regular Lyft will be enough. Do you have a lot of kids in car seats and a lot of Luggage? Plus size is sure to suit everyone!

Do children require car seats in Lyft?

Some states, cities, and countries treat Lyft like a taxi (often shockingly exempt from passenger safety regulations), while others treat Lyft like a personal car (subject to the same rules as in your own car). And sometimes local laws do not yet take into account the use of car-sharing services with children!

Before you travel anywhere with a car seat age child, make sure to search online for the destination and “Lyft car seat laws” or “Lyft child seat rules”, but sometimes even that isn’t straightforward.

If you are visiting a jurisdiction where rental cars must comply with local car seat laws, Lyft’s Policy requires that you provide a car seat that complies with local regulations. In some places, you’ll need a rear-facing seat for your child up to 2 years old, and in some places, you’ll even need a high-back booster for your school-age child – study before you go.

Can you ride Lyft without a child car seat?

According to Lyft’s car seat policy, parents are responsible for bringing a car seat if their child requires one in accordance with their age and local laws. Drivers are allowed to refuse a ride if they don’t have a car seat. You will even have to pay a cancellation fee. Yes, many untrained parents are left standing on the side of the road because of drivers who do not want to take responsibility for the unsafe transportation of a small child.

Of course, it is extremely unsafe to take a child in any car without a car seat until they pass the “five-step test” around 10-12 for most kids. The laws of physics don’t change just because you’re in rideshare!

Use your own car seat riding Lyft

Fortunately, there are plenty of amazing lightweight car seats for travel and even folding car seats that are easy to take with you on flights or spend a day in the city. If you’re riding Lyft with an infant, it’s hard to beat the Doona baby car seat as the perfect Lyft baby car seat!

We found that Lyft drivers are much more patient about installing car seats and allow us to find time for a secure fix than traditional taxi drivers, probably because they know that we will evaluate them after the ride. However, they may not know what installing a car seat entails. One of the techniques is to leave the car door open until you finish installing the car seat and fasten the child.

You can be sure that no one will leave until all the doors are closed! Learn how to quickly install a car seat.

If you have multiple children in car seats and the driver’s seat is completely pushed back, feel free to ask them to move forward if possible. Regardless of whether you are installing a car seat or not, everyone deserves leg room!

Make sure that you have mastered several ways to install a car seat. While LATCH may be the most convenient, sometimes it is not available for all seats (or not available at all in some countries). Just in case, conveniently fasten the car seat with a seat belt. If you’re leaving the US, you may find that your seat belts don’t lock when you pull them out completely, so bring a locking clip with you and learn how to use it.

Once your child outgrows the IMMI Go, she should fit well in a travel booster car seat.

Do Lyft drivers have a child seat at all times?

Only one seat is available to each driver, and not every driver has a car seat permanently. Many drivers don’t like to carry them around because they take up space in the trunk, which can be at a premium for airport trips.
